Shadowing a Remote Desktop Session with FQDN may fail

Symptoms

You try to assist another user on a Remote Desktop Session (RDS) Host by shadowing his session. This can be done with various tools like "Remote Desktop Services Manager" or shadow.exe from a command line. When the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) of the RDS Host is used, the attempt may fail with one of the following errors.

Access Denied

or

Remote control failed. Error code 87
Error [87]:The parameter is incorrect.

Cause

During shadowing the Computername (15 characaters) is compared to the given name, and in case of a FQDN the names are different.

Workaround

When using command line tools, specify the computer name and not the FQDN.

Example: use "shadow 3 /v:RDSHost1" and not "shadow 2 /v:RDSHost1.contoso.com"

When using "Remote Desktop Services Manager", the FQDN may be displayed by default. In that case add the desired Computer in a own group like "My Group" and specify the Computername only.
