Error when you try to install the Microsoft Online Services Directory Synchronization Tool: "The current user is not member of Microsoft Identity Lifecycle Management (ILM) Admin Group"

Symptoms

When you try to install the Microsoft Online Services Directory Synchronization Tool for Microsoft Office 365, you receive the following error message:

The current user is not member of Microsoft Identity Lifecycle Management (ILM) Admin Group.

Cause

This issue occurs if the installation of the Microsoft Online Services Directory Synchronization Tool was not completed or if the user account that you used to log on to the computer does not have sufficient permissions to open or to perform tasks in Microsoft Identity Lifecycle Manager (ILM).

Resolution

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Manage.
  2. Under Computer Management, expand Local Users and Groups, and then expand Groups.
  3. Make sure that the MIISAdmins group exists. If the group is missing, create a group that is named MIISAdmins.
  4. Add yourself to the group.
  5. Log off from the computer, and then log on to establish the new group membership in the access token.
  6. Reinstall the Microsoft Online Services Directory Synchronization Tool.
