IPMI driver incorrectly returns time-out errors during KCS communication in Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 and that supports the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) standard.
  • You use the IPMI driver to communicate with the baseboard management controller (BMC) by using Keyboard Controller Style (KCS) communication.
  • The interrupt mode is enabled for IPMI.
In this scenario, the IPMI driver intermittently returns time-out errors during KCS communication. Additionally, the following event is logged in the System log:

ID: 1004
Source: IPMIDRV
Description: The IPMI device driver attempted to communicate with the IPMI BMC device during normal operation. However the communication failed due to a timeout. You can increase the timeouts associated with the IPMI device driver.

Note The hardware device actually sends back the interrupts in time. Therefore, the IPMI driver should not be returning time-out errors.

Cause

This issue occurs because the IPMI driver incorrectly sets the expiration time for the KCS transaction.
