Build Service Host windows service fails to start and report an error in the Application Log


Symptoms

TFS Visual Studio 2010 Build Service Host crashes.

Cause

The service credentials (username and password) provided to the Build Service are invalid or the service account is no longer a member of Project Collection Build Service Accounts security group.

Resolution

  1. Go to Team Foundation Server Administration Console.
  2. Select Build Configuration node.
  3. Stop Build Service.
  4. Make sure Build Service credentials are valid (open Properties dialog and reconfigure Build Service with valid credentials if needed).
  5. Make sure Build Service account is a member of Project Collection Build Service Accounts group (follow the instructions in MSDN article Add the Build Service Account to the Project Collection Build Service Accounts Security Group
