"STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND" error message when you open a newly-created file in a shared folder in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You enable the Server Message Block (SMB) version 2 directory cache on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • From the computer, you access a shared folder on a remote computer by using the SMB version 2 protocol.
In this scenario, the SMB version 2 directory cache may not update after a file is created in the shared folder. This behavior causes the next file-open operation on the newly-created file to display the following error message:
STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND

Cause

This issue occurs because of a timing issue in the SMB redirector (Mrxsmb20.sys). When this timing issue occurs, the directory cache is not updated accordingly when a file is created.
