Error message when attempting to use '<' or '>' symbols for search criteria in Dynamics CRM 2011

Symptoms

When you try to search with the greater than or less than symbols as search criteria, you see an error:

Cause

CRM is unable to comprehend the symbol characters.

Resolution

Use the column level filter tool for the grid views instead of the advanced query syntax in the search control.
