Private key permissions are reset to the default values if a machine certificate is renewed by the Certificate Autoenrollment feature in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • The Certificate Autoenrollment feature is deployed in a domain environment.
  • A client computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 receives a machine certificate through the Certificate Autoenrollment feature.
  • You change the private key permissions on the associated machine certificate.
  • The machine certificate is renewed by the Certificate Autoenrollment feature.
In this scenario, the private key permissions on the machine certificate are reset to the default values.

Note The following are the default values of the private key permissions on the machine certificate:

Hotfix information
