Word for Mac 2011: Automation error -2147483640


Symptoms

When you open a calendar template in Word for Mac 2011, you may receive the following error message:

Cause

The error occurs when Region, in the Mac OS System Preferences, is set to specific countries like South Africa, or Lithuania.

Note The error may also occur when other countries are selected.

Resolution

Microsoft is currently investigating this issue.

We recommend that you follow the steps provided in the "Workaround" section of this article to resolve the problem.

Workaround

To avoid the error, switch the region to United States. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Quit all active applications.
  2. On the Apple menu, click System Preferences.
  3. Under the Personal section of the System Preferences window, click Language & Text.
  4. Select the Formats tab, and then set the region to United States.

Steps to reproduce the behavior:
  1. Quit all active applications.
  2. On the Apple menu, click System Preferences.
  3. Under the Personal section of the System Preferences window, click Language & Text.
  4. Select the Formats tab, and then set the region to South Africa.
  5. Open Word 2011.
  6. On the File menu, click New from Template.
  7. Select a calendar template and then click Choose.
The error (Automation error -2147483640) will appear and the Month and Year fields in the Select Calendar Dates window will be blank.
