"MoveSecurityAttributes" registry entry does not work in Windows 7, in Windows Vista, in Windows Server 2008 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

To resolve this issue, install the following hotfix package on the affected computer.

Note To guarantee that the moved objects only include permissions from the new parent folder, you have to make sure that the hotfix package is installed and that the value of the MoveSecurityAttributes registry entry is set to 0.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

You can change how Windows Explorer handles permissions when objects are moved in the same NTFS volume. By default, when an object is moved within the same volume, the object preserves its permissions. However, if you want to change this behavior so that the objects inherit the permissions from the new parent folder, change the registry as follows:

1. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER
2. Locate and then click the following registry key:
   
   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
3. Right-click MoveSecurityAttributes, click Edit, and then click Modify.
4. In the Value data box, type 0.
5. Exit Registry Editor.

You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.
