FIX: Test controller crashes when a Web test returns a large result file in Visual Studio 2010 or in Test Manager 2010

Symptoms

Assume that you try to run a Web test in Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 or in Microsoft Test Manager 2010. However, the test controller (Qtcontroller.exe) crashes with an OutOfMemoryException exception or an unhandled exception if the test result file is large. Specifically, this issue occurs when the test results (.webtestresults) file is 1.5 gigabytes (GB) or larger.

Note Additionally, when the test controller crashes with an unhandled exception, you receive the following error message:
(QTController.exe, PID <n>, Thread <n>) TcmRunner: Unhandled exception for run [90]: Internal Error!

Cause

This issue occurs because the Web test runs multiple iterations, and then produces a large result file. This behavior may consume a large amount of memory. However, Qtcontroller.exe is a 32-bit process. 

Note The memory space of 32-bit processes is limited to 2 GB.

Resolution

After you apply the hotfix, Qtcontroller.exe runs as a 64-bit process in x64-based operating systems.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must have Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1) installed.

Restart requirement

You may have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix if the affected files are being used. We recommend that you exit Visual Studio 2010 before you apply this hotfix.

The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.
