Adding the Hyper-V role in Windows Server 2008 R2 may cause a Stop 0x5C on reboot if x2APIC is enabled

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You are running Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You have Intel's® x2APIC mode enabled in the BIOS or the operating system.
  • In Windows you enable the Hyper-V role and reboot the machine.

In this scenario, you may encounter a Stop error during boot that resembles the following:

STOP: 0x0000005C (0x0000000000007002, 0x0000000000000001, 0x0000000000000001, 0x0000000000000000)

Cause

Using x2APIC mode while the Hyper-V role is installed in Windows Server 2008 R2 is not a supported configuration.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, either disable x2APIC mode or uninstall the Hyper-V role in Windows.

Note: x2APIC mode can be enabled through the Windows Server 2008 R2 operating system even if has been disabled in the BIOS. However, if x2APIC mode has been enabled in the BIOS it cannot be disabled through the operating system.

The following bcdedit.exe commands can be used to enable and disable x2APIC mode in Windows Server 2008 R2 on an x2APIC capable system:

bcdedit /set x2apicpolicy enable

bcdedit /set x2apicpolicy disable

More Information

Enabling x2APIC mode allows for the support of more than 128 logical processors, up to 256. However, with the Hyper-V role enabled Windows Server 2008 R2 will only recognize 64 logical processors. As a result, there is no real need to enabled x2APIC mode when the Hyper-V role has been enabled.
