You cannot access a WebDAV share by using the Explorer View feature in Internet Explorer on a Windows 7-based or Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Assume that you use Windows Internet Explorer to access a WebDAV share by using the Explorer View feature on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. However, you may be unable to access the WebDAV share again more than five seconds after you first accessed the WebDAV share. Additionally, you may receive an error message that resembles the following:
Internet Explorer could not open share URL as a web folder. Would you like to see its default view instead?
Notes
  • In this error message, share URL is a placeholder for the URL that points to the WebDAV share.
  • This issue occurs if the WebDAV server hosts the WebDAV share on the root directory of the server.

Cause

This issue occurs because the path of the WebDAV share cannot be resolved more than five seconds after the WebDAV share is first accessed.

The logic by which you access the WebDAV share by using the Explorer View feature involves the coordination of the Windows Explorer shell and the WebDAV components. However, a mechanism that caches the relative path of the WebDAV share is implemented in these components. Therefore, the path of the WebDAV share cannot be resolved if the WebDAV server hosts the WebDAV share on the root directory of the server.
