Black screen during a Remote Assistance session in Windows Vista, in Windows Server 2008, in Windows 7, or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a computer that is running one of the following operating systems:
    • Windows Vista
    • Windows Server 2008
    • Windows 7
    • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • The computer joins a domain. The following Group Policy settings are enabled in the domain:
    User Account Control: Allow UIAccess applications to prompt for elevation without using the secure desktop
    User Account Control: Switch to the secure desktop when prompting for elevation
  • You use a standard user account to log on to the computer. This standard user account belongs to specific groups that have some administrative privileges. For example, the account belongs to the Backup Operators group, to the Network Configuration Operators group, or to the Power Users group.
  • You request remote assistance from an administrator.
  • The administrator creates a Remote Assistance session on the computer.
  • The administrator tries to run a program on the computer. The program requires elevated user rights.
In this scenario, you are prompted to enter the credentials of the administrator. Additionally, the administrator receives a black screen in the Remote Assistance session.

Cause

When a standard user account has been granted some additional privileges, the the remote administrator is not presented User Access Control elevation prompts.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
