The BITS Compact Server service randomly stops responding under high stress in Windows Server 2008 R2 or in Windows Server 2008 SP2

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) Compact Server feature on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 or in Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2).
  • You create a URL group on the BITS Compact Server.
  • You delete the URL group. At the same time, a request is sent to the URL group.
  • The BITS Compact Server is under high stress.
In this scenario, the BITS Compact Server service randomly stops responding.

Cause

This issue occurs because of a deadlock situation within the BITS Compact Server service.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install the following hotfix package on the affected Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer.

Note After you install the hotfix on the affected Windows Server 2008 SP2-based computer, the hotfix also installs Windows PowerShell or Windows Remote Management (WinRM) 2.0 if it is not installed.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must be running one of the following operating systems:
  • Windows Server 2008 SP2
  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 file information notes

Workaround

To work around this issue, you have to end the Svchost.exe process that hosts the BITS Compact Server service.

Note Ending the Svchost.exe process also ends other services that run within the same Svchost.exe process. You can run the tasklist -svc command at a command prompt to check which services share the same Svchost.exe process with the BITS Compact Server service.
