Symptoms

When you attempt to join a Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 site, Setup may not work and you may receive the following error message:

Cause

This issue can occur if Exchange Server 5.5 is running on the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server-based computer that is the domain controller. By default, Windows 2000 Server registers the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) service with port 389. Therefore, the Exchange Server directory cannot register the Exchange Server LDAP service.

As a result, the following event ID 1306 error message is logged:
Register LDAP protocol failed with error 10048. If port number 389 is used by another application, change to an unused port, then shut down and restart Microsoft Exchange Directory Services. Contact Microsoft Support Service if condition persists.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, use the Exchange Server Administrator program:
  1. Under Servers, click the problem server.
  2. Click Protocols, and then click LDAP.
  3. On the General tab, click to clear the Use site Defaults for all properties check box.
  4. Choose a different port (other than 389).
  5. Stop and restart the directory service.
