View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You are running Windows 7.
  • Your computer does not support hibernation or hibernation has been disabled.
  • You launch the Power Options applet in Control Panel, click on the "Change plan settings" link for the selected power plan and then click on the "Change advanced power settings" link to access the advanced settings options.
In this scenario, you may still see hibernate listed as the selected option for some power management settings.

Cause

Windows 7 does not automatically refresh the list of current power management settings in the "Advanced settings" window of Power Options., even if the option is no longer available. In addition, some power management settings default to hibernate even if hibernation is not available on the computer.

Resolution

Open the drop-down list to show the available sleep options for a power management setting. This will force Windows to query the computer's capabilities and will remove hibernate from the list of available options.
