Windows 2008 Storage Server R2 installation Fails with Error “Cannot find a network connection.” on a Server with no Active Network Connection

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You are installing Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 from media.
  • Either the network adapter is not connected to a live network or no Network Adapter is enabled or installed.
In this scenario during the installation of Windows 2008 Storage Server R2, the installation will fail with this message:

Errors occurred during installation

Cannot find a network connection. Check your network connection and then click Restart.

Cause

Windows 2008 Storage Server R2 is built with the same code base as Small Business Server 2011 Essentials. The installation of the operating system will be blocked if there is no network adapter present or if the network adapter is not connected to a live network.

Resolution

Have a Network Adapter installed and enabled on the server which is connected to a live network (router, hub, or switch) or loop back to itself.

- Following scenario will be blocked:
No Network card.
Have Network card but no cable connected.
 
- Following will be supported:
Have a Network Adapter enabled, with a network cable connected to a live network (router, hub, or switch) or loop back to itself.
Note: Network connectivity does not require Internet connection or connection to other machines.
