Certain user folders are absent from the user profile in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2 if the folders are excluded from the roaming profile

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Assume that you are using the Exclude directories in roaming profile Group Policy setting to exclude some default user folders such as My Music from the roaming profile of a user in an Active Directory domain environment. The user uses his/her credential to log on a Windows 7-based or Windows Server 2008 R2-based client computer. In this situation, the default folders that are excluded by using the Group Policy setting are absent from the user profile.

Notes
  • The excluded default folders still exist in the user profile on the first Windows 7-based or Windows Server 2008 R2-based client computer that the user logged on to.
  • This issue only occurs when the following conditions are true:
    • The excluded folder is a known folder.
    • The excluded folder is present in the default profile.
    • The excluded folder is a per-user folder.
    • The excluded folder is a child folder of the profile directory.

Cause

This issue occurs because the user profile on a Windows 7-based or Windows Server 2008 R2-based client computer is copied directly from the domain database when a roaming profile of the user exists in the domain.

By default, no roaming profile of the user exists when the user logs on to the domain from a Windows 7-based or Windows Server 2008 R2-based client computer for the first time. Therefore, the user profile is generated from the local default user profile that contains all default folders. However, the excluded folders are not uploaded to the roaming profile when the user logs off. Instead, these folders are cached locally.
