Symptoms

When you use the Microsoft Fax Service in Windows, you experience the following problems:
  • On a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, the Fax Service snap-in displays only the first two fax-capable devices in the Devices section.
  • On a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer, the Fax Service snap-in displays only the first four fax-capable devices in the Devices section.
This problem occurs even though there are more than two fax devices for the Windows 2000-based computer and more than four fax devices for the Windows Server 2003-based computer.

Cause

This problem occurs because the Fax Service is designed as a client-side faxing solution that handles only two fax devices.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. If you have multiple devices, choose the set of devices that you want to appear in the Fax Service snap-in, and then install those devices on unique ports on the computer.
  2. If the devices are already installed but not in the order that you want, you can remove the devices and then reinstall the devices in the correct order.
Note The order of installation dictates the devices that are listed in the Fax Service snap-in.

The following is the fax device limit on different operating systems:
  • On all versions of Microsoft Windows XP and on Windows Server 2003, Web Edition, the fax device limit is one.
  • On all versions of Windows 2000, the fax device limit is two.
  • On Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition and on Windows Small Business Server 2003, the fax device limit is four.
  • On Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition and on Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition, there is no fax device limit.
