Client computers do not obtain an IP address when they request a DHCP lease from a Windows Server 2008 R2-based DHCP server

Symptoms

Assume that a client computer requests a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) lease from a Windows Server 2008 R2-based DHCP server. The DHCP lease that the client computer requests has a shorter duration than the lease duration that is defined on the DHCP server. In this situation, the client computer does not obtain an IP address from the DHCP server.

Cause

This issue occurs because the Windows Server 2008 R2-based DHCP server cannot handle a request for a lease that is shorter than the lease that is defined on the DHCP server.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must be running Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

Additionally, you must have the DHCP server role installed.

To use the hotfix in this package, you do not have to make any changes to the registry.

Restart requirement

You may have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.�To avoid restarting the computer, stop the DHCP Server service before you apply the hotfix.
