A certificate mapping rule in IIS does not work for a client certificate that has Unicode encoding attributes in Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, or Windows 7

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install Internet Information Services (IIS) on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You install the IIS Client Certificate Mapping module on the computer.
  • You configure the client certificate mappings and create certificate mapping rules on the computer.

Note You can use client certificates in this manner for user authentication purposes. For more information about how to do this, see the "More information" section.
  • The client certificate for one user has Unicode encoding attributes. For example, the name of the user contains a UTF-8 string.
In this scenario, the certificate mapping rule does not work for this user.

Cause
