Task sequence fails with the error message “Failed to install WinPE” when using prestage media in System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You create a prestaged installation media in System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R3.
  • You create a task sequence on a System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Service Pack 2 (SP2) site server.
  • You configure the task sequence to use the prestaged installation media to deploy an operating system to a computer.
  • The boot image in the prestaged installation media is newer than the assigned boot image in the task sequence.
In this scenario, the newer boot image is not installed and the whole task sequence fails. Additional, the following error code is logged in the Smsts.log file:
Failed to install WinPE. Code(0x80004005)

Resolution

The following hotfix package resolves the issue in the site server role of System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2.

To resolve this issue, install the following hotfix package on the primary System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 site server.

Note The following hotfix package can be installed on a System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 site server that is running an x86-based version of an operating system or an x64-based version of an operating system:

If you close the Configuration Manager Administrator console before you install this hotfix, you do not have to restart the computer.
