System event ID 11 is logged on resume when an I/O operation to a raw USB 2.0 or 3.0 attached hard disk drive in Windows operating systems

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer running a Windows operating system.
  • Attach a USB 2.0 or 3.0 storage device to the system.
  • Let the system go into Hibernate.

In this scenario after you resume Windows from hibernation, a System Event ID 11 may be logged in the Event Viewer:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Disk
Event Category: None
Event ID: 11
Date: Date
Time: Time
User: N/A
Computer: Computer_name
Description:
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR1

Cause

When the operating system resumes, there is a I/O (IRP) request that is sent to each storage device attached to the system to determine if the device is removable or not. During this request, there is a timeout required for the device to respond, if the device takes longer to power up than the timeout, this request is cancelled and System Event ID 11 is logged because the device has been reported with an unusual status code.

Resolution

There is no functionality loss as a result of System Event ID 11 being logged. This error can be safely ignored.

More Information

This issue has been previously reported on Windows 2000 when the I/O request was cancelled by benchmarking tools such as Iometer. In newer Windows operating systems, this I/O request is being cancelled by Windows.
