Windows Live Photo Gallery 2011 Generates Error Code 0x800706ba when an Application Tries to Open a JPG file

Symptoms

  Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a computer running Windows 7.

  • You have Windows Live Photo Gallery 2011 installed.

  • Windows Live Photo Gallery is set as the default application to open a JPG file.

  • You have an application which calls “ShellExecuteW” to open a JPG file.

 In this scenario, when you attempt to open the JPG file using the Windows Live Photo Gallery application, you may receive the following error message:

            An error is preventing the photo or video from being displayed.

Error code: 0x800706ba

 Note: The error code 0x800706ba indicates that the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) server is unavailable.

Cause

Windows Live Photo Gallery incorrectly handles the request and fails to open the file.

Resolution

This is a known problem with Windows Live Photo Gallery 2011. Microsoft has released a newer version of Windows Live Essentials 2011 that addresses this issue in Windows Live Photo Gallery.  You can download and install Windows Live Essentials 2011 by clicking on the following link:
