Windows logo key+P keyboard shortcut does not extend the desktop to multiple monitors correctly in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:  
  • You have a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • The computer uses an AMD Vancouver series Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) that supports display extension to no more than two non-DisplayPort monitors. 
  • You connect three non-DisplayPort monitors to the computer, and configure the desktop to display in Clone mode.
  • You try to use the Windows logo key+P keyboard shortcut to extend the desktop.
In this scenario, the desktop is not displayed in Extended Desktop mode, and continues to be displayed in Clone mode.

Note The display extension operation fails because the GPU does not support Extended Desktop mode on more than two monitors. However, the desktop should be extended to as many monitors as the GPU supports, instead of reverting to Clone mode.

Resolution

After you install this hotfix, the desktop is extended to the supported number of monitors when you use the Windows logo key+P keyboard shortcut.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must be running one of the following operating systems:
  • Windows 7
  • Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components.
