Black lines appear in an application window that is displayed by using DirectX and GDI in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Assume that you have an application that uses DirectX and GDI to display the application window on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. In this situation, black lines may appear in the application window.

Notes
  • If you change the size of the application window, the black lines may disappear temporarily.
  • This issue occurs when the application calls certain functions, such as the DwmGetCompositionTimingInfo function.

Cause

This issue occurs because DirectX incorrectly takes Device Bitmaps mode code path when Vista Blt mode is enabled. When certain functions are called, incorrect flags are returned to the caller. Therefore, DirectX does not detect that Vista Blt mode is enabled.

Note Device Bitmaps mode is a new interoperation mode between DirectX and GDI that was introduced in Windows 7 and in Windows Server 2008 R2. Device Bitmaps mode was introduced because Vista Blt mode, which is used in Windows Vista and in Windows Server 2008, may cause high memory usage. When an application uses DirectX and GDI to display the application window in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2, Device Bitmaps mode is enabled. However, if the application calls certain functions (such as the DwmGetCompositionTimingInfo function), the interoperation mode is changed to Vista Blt mode.

  • GDR service branches contain only those fixes that are widely released to address widespread, extremely important issues. LDR service branches contain hotfixes in addition to widely released fixes.
  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 R2 and for Windows 7" section. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
