Symptom

The device description for a tape drive that is displayed in the Device Manager is not the one specified in the inf file used to install the tape drive.

Cause

For devices that belong to the Tapedrive device setup class, the inbox Storage Co-installer searches the install section in the inf file for an inf directive called “UseInfDeviceDesc” during the installation of the device. If this directive is found and is set to a value of 1, the device description that’s specified in the inf file will be used. On the other hand if this directive is not found or found but set to a value other than 1, then the device description in the inf file is not used; instead the bus enumerated value is used.

Resolution

Modify the install section in the inf file as follows to ensure it always uses the device description specified in the inf file:

[Your DDInstall Section]

UseInfDeviceDesc=1
