Listing an NFS share that contains many files takes a long time in Windows Server 2008

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install the Services for Network File System (NFS) role on a Windows Server 2008-based computer.
  • You export an NFS share that contains many files.
  • You mount the NFS share from a client computer, and then you run the ls command to list the files on the share.
In this scenario, it takes a very long time to complete the listing operation.

Cause

This issue occurs because a trim function is triggered when the directory cache is exhausted. The trim function enters an infinite loop and then takes much longer than expected to complete the listing operation.
