Rewritable Compact Disks (CDs) written by certain CD-writing software show an empty folder on Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows PE

Symptoms

Rewritable Compact Disks (CDs) written by certain CD-writing software show an empty folder on Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows PE. Such CDs show all the data on the disk when read on a Windows XP machine. The issue happens only when the CDs have been written using a 3rd party CD-writing software.

Cause

This may happen due to the file system corruption of the CD when the CD-writing software does not complete the data writing session.

Resolution

  • Obtain an updated version of the CD writing software from the vendor that does not result with incomplete CD-writing sessions. The data writing session must be gracefully closed by the software.
  • Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem with error reporting of the operating systems newer than Windows XP.
