SQL Server 2008 resource does not come online after you apply updates on a cluster environment

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Assume that you have Microsoft SQL Server 2008 installed on a cluster environment. After you apply any updates (such as Service Packs, Cumulative Updates, or Hotfixes on SQL Server), the SQL Server resource does not become online.

Note This issue occurs when there is no LastConnect cache.

Cause

This issue occurs because SQL Server Browser Service is stopped when the system tries to bring the cluster resource online. Therefore, the instance of SQL Server location cannot be identified if there is no LastConnect cache.

Workaround

To work around this issue, try one of the following methods:
  • Keep the cluster named instance online before you start the update. The update setup will make the cluster resources go offline automatically.
  • After you hit the failure, manually put the SQL Server resource online. The error can be safely ignored because the patching is actually completed.
