An SMB share is displayed incorrectly as an NFS share in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • In an Active Directory domain environment, you assign a home folder on a server to a domain user.
  • You map the home folder to a drive. For example, you map the home folder to drive Z.
  • A domain user logs on to a Windows 7-based or Windows Server 2008 R2-based client computer that is not directly connected to the network. For example, the computer is connected to the network by using a mobile broadband connection or a VPN connection.
In this scenario, Windows Explorer displays drive Z as a failed mapped drive to a Network File System (NFS) share. However, drive Z is actually a Server Message Block (SMB) share.

NoteWhen this issue occurs, you cannot delete or disconnect the failed drive mapping. Additionally, you cannot map the drive to another network location.
