Symptoms

Assume that you are trying to access shared files or printers that are hosted by a remote server that uses the server message block (SMB) protocol from a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. In this situation, you may be unable to access the shared files or printers. Additionally, the remote server may become unresponsive to client requests.

NoteThis issue does not occur if SMB Version 2 is used.

Cause

This issue occurs when the ephemeral ports in the TCP/IP Port pool are exhausted. This is caused by the SMB virtual circuit (VC) endpoints leaking reference counts.
