Symptoms

In Exchange 2000 Server, you may have multiple storage groups on a single server. When Exchange 2000 is installed, it creates the first storage group by default. The mailbox database and log files for the first storage group are placed in the Mdbdata folder.

When you create another storage group, you can specify a folder for its database. If this folder name contains spaces, you may receive error messages similar to the following when you run Eseutil:
Usage Error: Invalid argument. Options must be preceded by '-' or '/'.

Cause

You receive this error message because the storage group folder name in the path contains spaces.

Resolution

To specify a path with Eseutil in Exchange 2000, you need to include the entire path in quotation marks. For example:

eseutil /d "c:\exchsrvr\exchange 2000 storage\mailbox.edb"
