FIX: IIS Manager does not display IP addresses that are assigned to the network adapter together with the skipassource flag

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008. Or, you install IIS 7.5 on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • Then, you install hotfix KB975808 on the computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008. Or, you install hotfix KB2386184 on the computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

The hotfix that you install enables you to assign IP addresses that are not registered for outgoing traffic on the Domain Name System (DNS) servers by using the skipassource flag for the netsh command.

Note For more information about the hotfixes, click one of the following article numbers as appropriate for your situation to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
975808 All IP addresses are registered on the DNS servers when the IP addresses are assigned to one network adapter on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 SP2 or Windows Vista SP2

2386184 IP addresses are still registered on the DNS servers even if the IP addresses are not used for outgoing traffic on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2
  • You use the netsh command to add a new IP to the network adapter together with the skipassource flag. For example, you use the following command:
    Netsh int ipv4 add address Interface_NameIP_Address skipassource=true
  • In IIS Manager, you try to add a binding of the new IP address to a website.

In this scenario, the new IP address is not displayed in the IP address field in IIS Manager.

Cause

This problem occurs because the method that IIS Manager uses only returns IP addresses from a DNS query. The IP addresses that are assigned together with the skipassource flag are not registered in DNS. Therefore, the IP addresses are not displayed.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, apply this hotfix. After you apply this hotfix, IIS Manager returns the list of all available IP addresses.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 file information notes
Important Windows Vista hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows Vista" is listed on the Hotfix Request page. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows Vista" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.
  • The files that apply to a specific product, SR_Level (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table.
    VersionProductSR_LevelService branch
    6.0.600 0. 20xxxWindows VistaRTMLDR
    6.0.600 1 . 22xxxWindows Vista and Windows Server 2008SP1LDR
    6.0.600 2 . 22xxxWindows Vista and Windows Server 2008SP2LDR
  • Service Pack 1 is integrated into the release version of Windows Server 2008. Therefore, RTM milestone files apply only to Windows Vista. RTM milestone files have a 6.0.0000.xxxxx version number.
  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Vista and for Windows Server 2008" section. MUM files and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.

Workaround

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:
  • Method 1: Manually enter the IP address when you configure binding settings for websites in IIS Manager.
  • Method 2: Add the IP address by using the appcmd.exe utility. For example, you can run the following command to add a site that is named contoso so that the site uses an HTTP binding for IP address 10.0.0.101 on port 8080:
appcmd set site /site.name: contoso /+bindings.[protocol='http',bindingInformation='10.0.0.101:8080:']
