"0x00000044" Stop error when you access shared files in Windows Server 2008 R2 or in Windows 7

When you access shared files or shared printers on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7, you receive the following Stop error message: Notes

• The parameters in the Stop error message may vary, depending on the configuration of the computer.
• Not all "0x00000044" Stop errors are caused by this issue.

This issue occurs because of a race condition in the Server Message Block (SMB) redirector.

When the race condition occurs, two threads try to free the same I/O request packet (IRP). Therefore, you receive the Stop error message.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
