The EnumPrinterDataEx function causes pool corruption in the printer spooler service in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7.
  • An application or service calls the EnumPrinterDataEx function to enumerate printer data.
  • Another application or service changes the same printer data at the same time.
In this scenario, the EnumPrinterDataEx function may cause pool corruption in the printer spooler service. The printer spooler service crashes if the corrupted pool is accessed some time later.

Cause

This issue occurs because of a race condition.

When you call the EnumPrinterDataEx function to enumerate printer data, you must call the function two times. The first function call is used to receive the required buffer size and the second function call is used to receive the data. If the printer data that is enumerated is changed between the two function calls, the EnumPrinterDataEx function may overwrite buffer size and cause pool corruption.
