You cannot access a DFS share by using a valid user account in Windows Server 2008 R2, in Windows 7, in Windows Vista or in Windows Server 2008

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You create a user account in a Windows Server 2008 domain or in a Windows Server 2008 R2 domain.
  • You use the adsiedit.exe utility to customize the following two attributes of the user account:
    • userPrincipalName
    • sAMAccountName
  • The user principal name (UPN) prefix in the customized UPN differs from the customized Security Accounts Manager (SAM) account name.
  • You try to access a Distributed File System (DFS) share by using the user account from a computer that is running one of the following operating systems:
    • Windows Vista
    • Windows Server 2008
    • Windows 7
    • Windows Server 2008 R2
In this scenario, you experience one of the following issues:
  • You cannot access the DFS share, and you receive the following error message if you access the DFS share by using a command prompt:

    System error 86 has occurred
The specified network password is not correct
  • You cannot access the DFS share, and you are prompted to input the user name and the password again if you access the DFS share by using the graphical user interface (GUI). For example, you cannot access the DFS share, and you are prompted to input your user name and your password again if you access the DFS share by using Windows Explorer.

Cause

This issue occurs because the DFS Client driver (dfsc.sys) incorrectly splits the UPN into a user name and domain name pair before the UPN is sent for authentication. If the UPN prefix is customized and does not match the SAM account name, the user authentication fails, and the issue that is described in the "Symptoms" section occurs.
