Credential authentication does not work if you paste credential information by using the Paste shortcut menu command in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You are prompted for credential authentication.
  • You paste credential information (such as your password) by using the Paste command that becomes available when you right-click the credential text box that is displayed when you are prompted.
In this scenario, the credential authentication fails.

Notes
  • This issue does not occur if you paste credential information by using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+V.
  • The following is a sample scenario:
    • You enable User Account Control (UAC) on the computer.
    • You try to run an application by using the Run as administrator option.
    • You paste the credential information by using the Paste command that becomes available when you right-click the credential text box when you are prompted.
    In this scenario, the credential authentication fails, and the application cannot start.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem that is described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
