Third-party applications or services encounter an authentication failure when security update 2478960 is installed in Windows Server 2003

Consider the following scenario:

• You have a computer that is running Windows Server 2003.
• You apply security update 2478960 that is documented in security bulletin MS11-014.

In this scenario, some third-party applications or services may encounter an authentication failure.

For example, some third-party server message block (SMB) clients may encounter an authentication failure.

This issue occurs because security update 2478960 that is documented in security bulletin MS11-014 removes the negotiate hint field in a SMB negotiate protocol response.

The negHints.hintName field contains the name of the server principal that is the service principal on the server and that has the user-name@domain-name format. In RFC 4178, the negHints.hintName field is an optional field. However, some third-party applications depend on the values in this field. Therefore, this issue occurs when the field is removed.

Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing.
