Upgrading from Windows Server 2008 to Windows Server 2012 fails when the IIS7 Beta Application Warm-up Module is installed


Symptoms

When you try to upgrade the operating system from Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2012 on a computer that has the IIS 7 Application Warm-up 1.0Beta module installed, the upgrade fails.

Cause

This problem occurs because the IIS 7Application Warm-up 1.0Beta module is not supported on Windows Server 2012.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, please take the following steps:

  1. On the Windows Server 2008/2008 R2 server, uninstall the IIS 7Application Warm-up 1.0Beta module.
  2. Perform the operating system upgrade to Windows Server 2012.

Follow the steps below to uninstall the IIS 7Application Warm-up 1.0Beta module:


  1. Click Start, type appwiz.cpl in the Start Search box, and then press Enter.
  2. In the Search Program and Features box, type Application Warm-up and press Enter.
  3. Right-click on Application Warm-up 1.0 for IIS 7 and then click Uninstall.
  4. Follow the instructions to uninstall Application Warm-up 1.0 for IIS 7.

Windows Server 2012 contains a release version of an Application Warm-up module for IIS, referred to as Application Initialization. The problem described in this article does not apply to the Application Initialization module Release Candidate (RC).
