Application may stop responding when it accesses some NFS shares from the Client for NFS component in Windows Vista, in Windows Server 2008, in Windows 7, or in Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install the Client for NFS component on a computer that is running Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You try to access some Network File System (NFS) shares on a server that has the READDIRPLUS remote procedure call (RPC) feature disabled.
In this scenario, the application that accesses the shared folders may stop responding.

Cause

This issue occurs because of an issue in the logic when the READDIRPLUS RPC is disabled.

When the READDIRPLUS RPC cannot be used to obtain data from the NFS server, the READDIR RPC is used instead. However, the client computer tries to use the READDIR RPC indefinitely because of an error in the NFS implementation for Windows Client. Therefore, the application does not respond.
