"The parameter is incorrect" error message when you run a logman command that starts an event trace on a Windows 7-based computer

Symptoms

Assume that you start an event trace on a Windows 7-based computer by using a logman command in BufferOnly mode. For example, you open a command prompt, type the following command, and then press Enter:
Logman start -ets Event Trace Session name -pf providername -mode BufferOnly
In this situation, the logman command fails and you receive the following error message:

This issue occurs because of an error in Logman.exe.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Workaround

To work around this issue, follow these steps:
  1. At a command prompt, type the following command, and then press Enter:
    Logman create trace session_name -pf provider_name -mode 0x00000400 -nb minimum_numbermaximum_number -bs buffer_size -ets


    Note When you configure BufferOnly mode by using -mode 0x00000400, the stream mode is File instead of Buffered.
  2. At a command prompt, type the following command, and then press Enter: Tracelog -start logger_name -guid guidfile-flag flag -b buffersize -min number -max number -level parameter -buffering.
