A Server becomes unresponsive to mouse or keyboard input and exhibits an abnormally high number of interrupts on 1 or more CPUs

Symptoms

On a computer running Windows Server, keyboard or mouse input may no longer function. If you look at Performance Monitor, you may see an abnormally high number of interrupts per second on one or more CPUs in the system.

Cause

This may be caused by either or both of the following conditions:

  • Drivers and/or components in the system that are not Message Signaled Interrupt (MSI) based.
  • Full power management capabilities are enabled on the Server.

Resolution

To work around this issue, try one of the following methods:

  1. Where possible, utilize devices and components within the server configuration that support MSI-based drivers.
  2. Try disabling some or all of the power management features of the platform as a temporary solution until MSI-based drivers can be installed.

More Information

This issue is not knowon to be Operating System specific and may occur on any server version from Windows Server 2003 and later. It is believed to be more prevalent on systems with high core density per CPU.
