The logon message is not displayed correctly when you connect to a RemoteApp application from a computer that has multiple monitors and that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You enable the Interactive logon: Message text for users attempting to log on Group Policy setting on a terminal server that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You connect to a RemoteApp application that is published by the terminal server from a client computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • The client computer has multiple monitors. For example, the client computer has four monitors.
  • Monitors on the terminal server have a higher display resolution than monitors on the client computer.
In this scenario, the logon message is not displayed correctly. The message is displayed in a column next to black space. The more monitors that you have, the smaller the column size becomes. For example, the column size is a quarter of the total screen if the client computer has four monitors.

Because of this issue, users cannot read the logon message because the message fonts are too small to read. This issue may cause legal concerns if you use the logon message to display a legal disclaimer.

Cause

This issue occurs because the smart sizing feature for RemoteApp scales down larger resolutions on the server monitor to fit the client monitor.

Resolution

To resolve the issue, install the following hotfix on the client computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

Note that in order to enable this functionality, both the client and server must have this QFE installed, and the new RDP setting must be enabled from the server side.  In order to ensure that all enterprise clients have installed this QFE, users of client machines inside the enterprise should not be given local administrator privileges.  If users are granted local administrator privileges, then they will be able to uninstall this QFE or to reinstall Windows without this QFE.
