Wmprph.exe crashes when opening a file in Windows Media Player on Server 2008 R2 from remote desktop connection


Symptoms

You are doing the following:
  • You are using Windows Media Player 12 on Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You are connecting to the server via remote desktop.
  • You are opening a media file from the File/Open dialog box.
  • The File/Open dialog box has the preview pane enabled.

In this scenario you may see the process wmprph.exe crash.  However, Windows Media Player (wmplayer.exe) remains running.

Cause

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in Windows Media Player 12.

Resolution

As a workaround, turn off the preview pane prior to opening a media file.

More Information

Typically this issue will occur silently and most users will not notice it. You would only notice this if a debugger is actively listening for faults in Windows Media Player.
