"0x000000C4" Stop error occurs when you run the "Common Scenario Stress with IO" test on a Windows 7-based computer on which Windows Virtual PC and Windows Logo Kit are installed

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Assume that you run the Common Scenario Stress with IO test on a Windows 7-based computer on which Windows Virtual PC and Windows Logo Kit are installed. In this scenario, the computer may crash. Additionally, you receive a Stop error message that resembles the following:

STOP 0x000000C4 (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4)
DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION

Notes
  • This issue also occurs if you manually enable the Driver Verifier for all USB drivers and then disable all USB host controllers by using Device Manager.
  • The parameters in this error message vary, depending on the configuration of the computer.
  • Not all 0x000000C4 Stop errors are caused by this problem.

Cause

This memory leak issue occurs because Windows Virtual PC uses a USB Redirection Policy Manager driver (Usbrpm.sys). This driver leaks a small amount of memory under certain conditions.

Note The amount of leaked memory when the USB port driver unloads is very small and does not cause a problem under ordinary operations. However, when you use Driver Verifier, the Stop error occurs.
