You may encounter file corruption issues when you use the Offline Files feature to synchronize data in Windows 7

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You use the Offline Files feature to synchronize data between a Windows 7-based computer and a file server in a network environment.
  • You set a quota for a user on the file server.
  • The file server disk for the user is full.
In this scenario, you may encounter file corruption issues. For example, the user changes an existing file offline. The file is bigger than the user quota. When offline file synchronization is started, the synchronization changes the file copy on the file server regardless of whether the file server has sufficient disk space. However, the attribute of the file copy is still updated after the sync is finished. Therefore, the file is corrupted.

Additionally, you receive the following error message in Sync Center:
A file was changed on this computer and the server whilst this computer was offline

Notes
  • If the user accesses the file only on the client computer, the user does not notice this issue, because of the cached copy that is stored on the client computer is fine.
  • If the user tries to access the server copy from another client, the file is corrupted and unusable.
