Windows 7 Displays Broken Thumbnail after Accessing Image File from a File Share Located on a Windows CE 6.0 Device

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • From a Windows 7 computer, you access a file share on a Windows CE 6.0 device.
  • You access a folder that contains image file(s).
  • In the folder properties, under the Customize tab, you optimize the folder for pictures.

In this scenario, the thumbnails of the image files on the share will be displayed as a white rectangle or failed thumbnail view. In addition, when viewing any image files on the Windows 7 computer, the thumbnails will be displayed in the same broken manner.

Cause

There is a known timing issue with accessing image files in thumbnail view on a Windows CE device from Windows 7. Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products listed in the “Applies To” section.

Resolution

To work around this issue you will need to perform the following steps on the Windows 7 computer:

1. Access the share on the Windows CE 6.0 device using the UNC path i.e. \\CompurterName\ShareName.
2. Right click on the folder which contains the images and select Properties.
3. Click on the Customize tab.
4. Under “Optimize this folder for:” select General Items and then click Apply and then OK.
5. Double-click on the folder to view its contents.
6. Right-click in the folder and select View->Details.
7. Right-click and select Refresh.
8. Close all open applications and Log Off the computer and then Log back on.
9. Access the share on the Windows CE 6.0 device using the UNC path i.e. \\CompurterName\ShareName.
10. Copy the file(s) to a folder on the Windows 7 client and access the file.

More Information

This issue may also occur when accessing files on a Windows CE 7.0 file share from a computer running Windows 7 and the shared folder optimized for pictures.


Steps to Reproduce the Issue:

On the Windows CE 6.0 device:
1. Create a shared folder and share it out i.e. TEST
2. Within the shared folder create another folder (i.e. images)
3. In the Images folder create or copy some image files (.bmp, jpg, etc)


On the Windows 7 Computer:
1. Access the share on the Windows CE 6.0 device using the UNC path i.e. \\CompurterName\ShareName
2. Right click on the folder which contains the images and select Properties
3. Click on the Customize tab
4. Under “Optimize this folder for:” select Pictures and then click Apply and then OK
5. Double-click on the folder to view its contents
6. Right-click in the folder and select View > Large Icons
7. Right-click and select Refresh
