FIX: Memory leak in WmiPrvSe.exe when you run a script to connect to the WMI WebAdministration namespace in Windows 7, in Windows Vista, in Windows Server 2008 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.5 on a computer that is running one of the following operating systems:
    • Windows Vista
    • Windows Server 2008
    • Windows 7
    • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • You run a Windows script to connect to the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) WebAdministration namespace.
    For example, you run the following VBScript script:
    Set oIIS = GetObject("winmgmts:root\WebAdministration")
    Set oSite = oIIS.Get("Site.Name='Default Web Site'")
    WScript.Echo "Retrieved an instance of Site "
    WScript.Echo " Name: " & oSite.Name
    WScript.Echo " ID: " & oSite.ID
    Set objInParam = oSite.Methods_("GetState"). _
    inParameters.SpawnInstance_()
    For i = 0 to 10000
    Set objOutParams = oIIS.ExecMethod("Site.Name='Default Web Site'", "GetState", objInParam)
    Wscript.Echo "Out Parameters: "
    Wscript.Echo "ReturnValue: " & objOutParams.ReturnValue
    WScript.Echo "LoopCount : " & i
    objOutParams = NIL
    Wscript.Echo "NIL is " & objOutParams

    Next
    oSite.Stop
In this scenario, a memory leak may occur in the WmiPrvSe.exe process.

File Information

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 file information notes
Important Windows Vista hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows Vista" is listed on the Hotfix Request page. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows Vista" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.
  • The files that apply to a specific product, SR_Level (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table.
    VersionProductSR_LevelService branch

    22xxx
    Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008SP2LDR
  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 and for Windows Vista" section. MUM files and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
