- The server is running the DNS Server service.
- The server is not connected to a domain.
- You start Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) or the DNS Microsoft Management Console (MMC) on a server that is connected to a domain. The domain-connected server is running the DNS Server service.
- You try to connect to the remote server from the domain-connected server by using RSAT or the DNS MMC.
