You cannot manage a remote DNS server by using RSAT or the DNS MMC on Window Server-based computers

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You deploy a remote server that is running Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • The server is running the DNS Server service.
  • The server is not connected to a domain.
  • You start Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) or the DNS Microsoft Management Console (MMC) on a server that is connected to a domain. The domain-connected server is running the DNS Server service.
  • You try to connect to the remote server from the domain-connected server by using RSAT or the DNS MMC.
In this scenario, you cannot connect to the remote server by using RSAT or the DNS MMC.

Cause

This issue occurs if the credentials that are used for authentication are not valid on the remote server. For example, this issue can occur if the credentials that are used to start RSAT or the DNS MMC domain-connected server are not valid on the remote server.

Workaround

To work around this issue, connect to the IPC$ share on the remote server.

More Information

After you connect to the IPC$ share on the remote server, the authentication information is stored in Credentials Manager and can be used to reconnect to the server by using RSAT or the DNS MMC.
